Congratulations to Kevin Freeman and Luke Rusher, who won the London Amateur Foursomes at the Berkshire Golf Club this weekend. It is the second time the pair have won this prestigious event, and the impressive shield, for Stoke Park and they saw off 63 other clubs to take the title over a windswept Red Course on Sunday afternoon, beating Walton Heath by 2&1 in the final.
The pair narrowly avoided defeat in the opening round, needing to win the last 3 holes on Friday morning to beat Woking at the last hole, and then beat Sandy Lodge by the same margin in round two. Saturday proved somewhat more comfortable, eight birdies in 15 holes being enough to see off Orsett, before coming from two down early on to beat the host club by 3&2 in the quarter finals. A strong front nine in Sunday morning’s semi-final was the foundation for a 3&2 semi-final win over Royal Ashdown Forest to set up a final with Walton Heath. Conditions for the final were extremely tough, with winds gusting at up to 40mph, but the Stoke Pair again got off to a great start and were three up after four holes. Walton Heath were never able to reduce the deficit to less than two holes, and were eventually beaten on the 17th.
